How to get through the APM PMQ when you don't test well

Some people thrive under the pressure of sitting an exam whilst others dread the idea of ever having to sit another one at any point in their lives. Some will even actively go out of their way to avoid them.

If you are getting ready to sit an exam for your a project management certification such as the APM PMQ and can already feel the exam dread descending, don’t worry.  Here are some of our best tips to help you get through it.

Talk about it

Nobody will know how stressed you are about your exam unless you open up. If you are panicking because you don’t feel you are ready for theexam just yet, then discussing it with your manager could help. Perhaps you can reach a mutual decision about the possibility of postponing the exam to a later date.

Find the right exam for you

Exams come in all shapes and sizes because not everyone is suited to the same type of thing. If you choose something that you struggle to fit into a busy schedule, then you will become more stressed about sitting the exam. Therefore, you should look for something that will fit in around your already busy day. This might be online learning which can work really well for a lot of people and can of course often be done when you have free time. Others prefer a classroom type environment as the structure helps them learn.

Find your community

Being part of a group of like-minded people who are studying for the same exams, working in the same field, or both can help when it comestom learning. Online forums can be a great place to start and offer access to all kinds of resources and up to date information about a variety of different topics. Talking to real people with real experience can help with the learning process.

Work at your own pace

Working to another person’s schedule can be incredibly stressful. If you opt for onlinelearning, you will be in charge of the pace of your learning and will be able to complete the work to a timescale that works for you. You willalso be able to revise at your own pace as well, paying special attention to those areas of study that you are less familiar with. This can make the whole learning process less stressful and can help to relieve exam pressure.

Know your subject

Complete all of the work from the course and make sure you revise every topic. If you want to help make your exam less stressful then make sure you know your subject inside out. Often, it’s a question of time management and discipline. These are good project management skills that will help you later in your career.

Keep calm and take your time

You are not in a race; some people learn quicker than others. The only person who matters here is you so take your time and don’t race to be finished with your learning too quickly, take time to make sure you understand everything you are learning and if you get confused ask someone.
